19º DIA - 31/10/2012 - Passeio por Verona - Torre dei Lamberti, Chiesa di Santa Maria Antica, Casa di Romeo, Arena di Verona, Castel Vecchio, Disney Store, OVS
Segundo dia em Verona, depois de uma madrugada chuvosa, o dia amanheceu apenas nublado e frio. Acordamos por volta das 08:30h, organizamos o que precisávamos na mochila, nos arrumamos e fomos para a cozinha do nosso B&B para o café da manhã. Exceto a enorme máquina de café que fazia vários tipos de café, parecia que estávamos em nossa casa. Havia pães de forma, bolos, biscoitos caseiros, geléias, sucos, chás, iogurtes e um pote enorme de
Nutella. Tudo muito bem servido.
Depois do café, por volta das 09:40h, fomos até a
Piazza delle Erbe e ficamos um bom tempo ali olhando as bancas que vendem de tudo um pouco, como comidas de vários tipos, roupas, chapéus, luvas de couro ou sintéticas e lembrancinhas de todos os tipos (praticamente tudo 'made in china'). Compramos algumas lembrancinhas para nós e para a família e amigos. Comprei também uma luva de couro (por incrível que pareça era legítimo), já que estava muito frio e as minhas mãos estavam congelando. Depois seguimos para o
Palazzo della Ragione onde fica a entrada para a
Torre dei Lamberti, de onde se tem uma vista panorâmica de toda a cidade. Usamos nossos
Verona Cards para entrarmos e pagamos 1 euro cada um para utilizar o elevador que leva até o penúltimo andar. A vista lá de cima é realmente espetacular, pode-se ver toda a cidade ao longe até os Alpes e tirar fotos fantásticas, como fizemos. Nesse andar ficam três dos quatro sinos da torre: o SS. Fermo e Rustico (o menor de todos), Marangona e Rabbiosa. O último andar é acessível por uma escada em espiral, onde fica o maior dos quatro sinos, o Rengo, e suas 'janelas' são todas protegidas por telas trançadas. Passamos um bom tempo ali tirando fotos da vista e da torre e depois descemos e demos uma pequena olhada na 'book store' que tem na saída.
Assim que saímos, seguimos pela Via della Costa em direção à Casa di Romeo, mas encontramos no meio do caminho uma igreja muito bonita,
Chiesa di Santa Maria Antica, onde entramos e ficamos admirando sua belíssima estrutura interior. Como fizemos nas outras, acendemos uma vela para proteção e reforçamos nossas orações, depois tiramos algumas fotos ali e saímos, seguindo em direção à Casa di Romeo, que ficava bem na esquina próximo à Igreja. Quando chegamos, quão grande foi nossa decepção, pois não sabíamos que da casa só restou mesmo o muro com a sacada e uma placa indicando o local, pois passou a ser uma propriedade privada e não é acessível. Tiramos ao menos fotos do muro com a sacada e retornamos à
Piazza delle Erbe e depois seguimos nossa jornada pela Via Giuseppe Mazzini em direção à
Arena di Verona.
Já eram por volta de 12:50h quando chegamos à
Arena di Verona, e procuramos logo a entrada para não perdermos tempo e, como não havia fila, entramos rapidamente utilizando nossos
Verona Cards. À primeira vista, assim que entramos nos corredores internos, tivemos a sensação de voltarmos ao passado, já que o trabalho que é feito para a conservação das estruturas é constante, principalmente porque a Arena é um dos únicos anfiteatros romanos que ainda estão ativos e conta com apresentações teatrais e de óperas especialmente durante a primavera e o verão. Seguimos pela galeria e subimos uma das escadas que dá acesso às arquibancadas. FANTÁSTICO! É a expressão que melhor descreve a Arena. Fotos e mais fotos não são suficientes para mostrar o quanto valeu a pena a visita. Pena que a temporada de apresentações havia acabado no meio de Outubro e não pudemos ter o privilégio de assistir a uma delas. Mas vale a pena a visita. Depois de vermos tudo e tirarmos muitas fotos, saímos por volta das 14:00h e fomos para a
Piazza Bra para escolhermos um lugar para, enfim, almoçarmos. Depois de olharmos os restaurantes e cardápios disponíveis, escolhemos o
Ristorante Nastro Azzurro, que fica no Vicoletto Listone e que tem um ambiente muito agradável e recomendo pelo bom atendimento. Pedimos um spaghetti al pomodoro para cada, uma taça de vinho para mim e uma água frisante para a Roberta. De sobremesa pedimos uma Panna Cotta de caramelo para cada e um café espresso. Tudo foi muito bem servido e estava muito saboroso, a um preço razoável de 33 euros.
Depois do almoço seguimos pela Via Roma até chegarmos ao
Castelvecchio. Esse grande castelo, que na realidade se chama Castello di San Martino in Aquaro, foi construído às margens do rio Ádige, a partir de 1354, por ordem de Cangrande II, governante da poderosa família Scala, e destinava-se a servir de residência, sendo ao mesmo tempo uma fortaleza protegida por altas muralhas. O Castelo abriga hoje o
Museo Civico di Castelvechio, que expõe uma grande coleção de esculturas, estátuas, pinturas, armamentos antigos, cerâmicas, trabalhos em ouro e alguns sinos antigos, sendo a maioria das peças do período românico de Verona. Há também numerosas pinturas e afrescos do século XIV. Há bastante informação sobre a história e as estruturas que compõem esse belíssimo castelo nesses sites:

Museu de Castelvecchio. Entramos pelo portal principal do castelo e seguimos pelo até o enorme e belíssimo jardim que fica bem na entrada. Tiramos algumas fotos ali e, com nossos
Verona Cards, seguimos para a bilheteria do museu do castelo. Andamos bastante entre salas e mais salas e tiramos muitas fotos. Já estávamos exaustos depois de tantas andanças pelo castelo e ver de quase tudo, só não fomos até a torre lateral sobre a entrada da Ponte Castelvecchio, pois o acesso a ele é feito por uma passarela descoberta na muralha e estava muito frio e chovendo.
Saímos do castelo por volta das 17:30h e resolvemos encerrar o dia de visitações e andar pelo comércio local olhando as vitrines e entrando em algumas lojas, como a
OVS, que é uma loja estilo C&A que vende de tudo e fica perto do Castelvecchio, e principalmente na nossa loja favorita, a
Disney Store, que fica na Via Giuseppe Mazzini, a principal rua comercial da cidade. Apesar de olharmos a loja inteira, compramos apenas mais algumas lembrancinhas e saímos pois a já eram quase às 20:00h e estava quase fechando. Como o comércio todo já estava fechando também, resolvemos voltar para o nosso B&B. Chegamos por volta das 20:30h e ficamos conversando, organizando as compras do dia e o restante das malas e nos preparando para a viagem do dia seguinte para a próxima cidade: Veneza... Dicas:
1) Como no post anterior, a principal dica: Verona Card. Com ele você pode entrar gratuitamente e sem filas em praticamente todos os museus, monumentos e igrejas de Verona e tem em duas versões: válido por 2 dias (15 euros) ou 5 dias (20 euros). Se você visitar 4 ou 5 lugares o cartão já está pago.
2) Outras duas dicas importantíssimas: calçados confortáveis e garrafa de água, já que o melhor meio de visitar as atrações é a pé.
3) A vista da Torre dei Lamberti é fantástica, principalmente do último andar. Se não tiver problemas com altura ou de locomoção, vale a pena. Só deve-se ter cuidado com os sinos, pois eles funcionam e tocam a cada 15 minutos.
4) Se estiver na cidade durante a temporada de apresentações na Arena de Verona, apesar de os preços serem um pouco caros, vale a pena conferir os espetáculos.
5) Se for visitar o Museu Cívico de Castelvecchio, prepare-se para andar muito pois ele é realmente enorme. Mas vale a pena.

It was our second day in Verona and, after a rainy dawn, the day was just cloudy and cold. We woke up around 08:30am, organize everything we needed in the backpack, got ready and went to the kitchen of our B&B for breakfast. Except the huge coffee machine which makes many kinds of coffee, it seemed we were in our home. There were loaves of bread, cakes, homemade cookies, jams, juices, teas, yogurts, and a big jar of
Nutella. Everything very well served.
After breakfast, at around 09:40am, we went to the
Piazza delle Erbe and stayed there a long time looking at the stalls selling a bit of everything, like various kinds of food, clothing, hats, leather or synthetic gloves and all kinds of souvenirs (almost everything 'made in china'). We bought some souvenirs for us, for family and friends. I also bought a leather glove (oddly enough it was genuine leather), since it was very cold and my hands were freezing. Then we went to the
Palazzo della Ragione where there is the entrance to the
Torre dei Lamberti, from where you have a panoramic view of the entire city. We used our
Verona Cards to get in and paid 1 euro each to use the lift that took us to the top floor. The view from there is really spetacular, you can see the whole city and also the distant Alps and take fantastic pictures as we did. On this floor you can find three of the four tower bells: the SS. Fermo and Rustico (the lowest of all), Marangona and Rabbiosa. The top floor is reachable by a spiral staircase, where you can find the largest of the four bells, the Rengo, and all windows are protected by a braided net. We spent some time there taking photos of the view and of the tower and then we went down and passed by the 'book store' near to the exit.
After we left there, we went by the Via della Costa towards to Casa di Romeo, but we found on the way a very beautiful church,
Chiesa di Santa Maria Antica, where we entered and were admiring its beautiful interior structure. As we did in the other churches, we lighted a candle for protection and strengthen our prayers, then we took some photos there and went out, heading towards to Casa di Romeo, which is right around the corner near the church. When we arrived there, how big was our disappointment because we didn't know that it's remaining only the wall with a balcony and a sign indicating the location of the house, which became a private property and is not accessible. At least, we took photos of the wall with the balcony and returned to the
Piazza delle Erbe and then followed our journey through Via Giuseppe Mazzini towards the
Arena di Verona.
It was already around 12:50pm when we arrived at the
Arena di Verona, and then we went to the entry without losing time and, how there wasn't queues, we entered quickly using our
Verona Cards. At the first view, when we entered by the internal corridors, we had the feeling of we get back to the past, since the work that is done for preserving the structures is constant, mainly because the Arena is one of the only Roman amphitheaters that are still active and counts with theatrical performances and operas especially during the spring and summer. We followed by the gallery and climbed one of the stairs which leads to the stands. FANTASTIC! It's the term that best describes the Arena. Photos and more photos are not enough to show how much it was worth the visit. The only pity is that the season of presentations had finished in the middle of October and we didn't have the privilege of watch one of them. But it is worth the visit. After seeing everything and we take a lot of pictures, we got out of there at around 02:00pm and went to
Piazza Bra to choose a place to finally we have lunch. After we look at the restaurants and available menus, we chose the
Ristorante Nastro Azzurro, located in Vicoletto Listone and that has a very nice environment and I recommend it by the proper care. We ordered a spaghetti al pomodoro for each, a glass of wine and a bottle of water. For dessert we ordered a Panna Cotta Caramel for each and a cup of espresso. Everything was very well served and was very tasty, for a reasonable price of 33 euros.
After lunch we went by Via Roma to arrive at the
Castelvecchio. This enormous castle, which actually is called Castello di San Martino in Aquaro, was built on the banks of the river Ádige, from 1354, by order of Cangrande II, ruler of the Scala family, and intended to serve as a residence, and at the same time being a fortress protected by high walls. Nowadays the castle houses the
Museo Civico di Castelvechio, which exposes a large collection of sculptures, statues, paintings, ancient weapons, ceramics, gold work and some old bells, most of them from the Romanic period of Verona. There are also numerous paintings and frescoes from the XIV century. There is enough information about the history and structures that make up this wonderful castle on these websites:

Castelvecchio Museum (Wikipedia - in English). We entered by the main gate of the castle and went to the huge and beautiful garden which is right at the entrance. We took some pictures there and, with our
Verona Cards, we went to the ticket office of the castle's museum. We walked a lot between rooms and more rooms and took many pictures. We were already exhausted after walking very much through the castle and see almost everything, we just didn't go to the tower over the entrance of the Castelvecchio Bridge, because the access to there is by an uncovered walkway on the wall and it was very cold and raining.
We got out of the castle at around 05:30pm and we decided to finish the visitation day and walk by local commerce looking at the shop windows and getting in some stores, as
OVS, which is a big store that sells about everything and is located near to Castelvecchio, and especially at our favorite store,
Disney Store, which is located at Via Giuseppe Mazzini, the main shopping street of the city. Although we look at the whole store, we bought a some little souvenirs and got out because it was almost 08:00pm and the store was being closed. How all stores were also being closed, we decided to return our B&B. We arrived there at around 08:30pm and we were talking, organizing purchases of the day and the other things in the luggages and preparing for the next day's trip to the next city: Venice... Tips:
1) As the last post, the main tip: Verona Card. With it you get free entry and no queues to almost all the museums, monuments and churches of Verona and there are two versions: valid for 2 days (15 euros) or 5 days (20 euros). Well worth it because the card pays itself back visiting 4 or 5 places.
2) Other two very important tips: wear comfortable shoes and a bottle of water, as the best way to visit the attractions is on foot.
3) The view from the Torre dei Lamberti is fantastic, especially from the top floor. If you have no problems with heights or mobility, is worth it. But must be careful with the bells as they work and play every 15 minutes.
4) If you are in Verona during the season of presentations at the Arena of Verona, although the prices are expensive, is worth checking out the shows.
5) If you visit the Castelvecchio Museum, you must be prepared to walk a lot because it is really huge. But worth it.
