10º DIA - 22/10/2012 - Partida Florença -> Pisa / Passeio por Pisa - Piazza dei Miracoli, Catedral de Pisa, Campo Santo, Batisterio, Museo delle Sinopie, Museo del’Opera del Duomo, Torre de Pisa, Piazza dei Cavalieri
Chegou o dia de deixar Florença e partir para Pisa. Tínhamos decidido no dia anterior partir para lá bem cedo para podermos aproveitar o dia inteiro sem perder nenhuma atração, já que no dia seguinte partiríamos para Gênova. Levantamos por volta das 08:00h e nos arrumamos para tomarmos o último café-da-manhã no hotel. Conversando durante o café, decidimos não sair com muita pressa, já que o checkin no hotel que reservamos, o La Pace, era só a partir das 14:00h e não seria nada legal ficar andando por lá carregando as malas de um lado para outro. Então fizemos uma refeição bem reforçada e sem muita pressa para aguentarmos a jornada e depois voltamos para o quarto para terminarmos de arrumar nossas coisas e sairmos.
Chegamos à Estação Santa Maria Novella por volta das 10:20h para tentarmos pegar o próximo trem regional para Pisa, que sairia às 10:28h, mas só conseguimos comprar passagens para 10:53h. Ficamos pacientemente esperando até a hora do nosso trem, que partiu exatamente às 10:53 e a viagem foi bem tranquila. Passamos por várias cidades e estações, até chegarmos por volta das 12:03h à Estação Pisa Centrale, em Pisa. Desembarcamos e fomos procurar nosso hotel, La Pace, que fica dentro de uma galeria logo depois da praça que tem em frente à estação. A galeria não tem uma aparência muito agradável, mas o hotel é muito bom, aconchegante e com uma ótima recepção, e recomendo a quem quiser se hospedar por lá. Como chegamos antes do horário de check-in, nos apresentamos e deixamos nossas malas no depósito de bagagens do hotel para podermos passear sem perder um tempo valioso aguardando pelo quarto. Antes de sairmos uma das recepcionistas nos deu um mapa e as indicações de como chegar aos principais pontos turísticos.
Saímos do hotel e fomos em direção à Piazza dei Miracoli. Seguimos pela Via Francesco Crispi até a Ponte Solferino, que atravessa o Rio Arno (aquele mesmo que corta Florença) e depois seguimos pela Via Roma até a Piazza dei Miracoli. E eis que avistamos a tão famosa Torre Inclinada, a Catedral de Pisa e o Batistério. Um ESPETÁCULO de estruturas belíssimas. Tiramos algumas fotos em frente à praça (havia tanta gente tirando fotos 'segurando' ou 'empurrando' a Torre que parecia 'flashmob', então nos recusamos a fazer o mesmo) e fomos procurar a bilheteria para comprarmos os ingressos para visitarmos os lugares. A bilheteria fica do outro lado da praça e há várias opções de ingressos combinados para visitar entre 1 a 4 lugares à escolha entre o Campo Santo, Batistério, Museo delle Sinopie e o Museo del’Opera del Duomo. A entrada na Catedral é gratuita e já está incluída no bilhete e o ingresso para a torre é vendido separadamente. Pode-se também comprar antecipadamente pelo site oficial: The Opera della Primaziale Pisana. Compramos ingressos somente para 4 lugares + Catedral, não quisemos subir na Torre.
O primeiro lugar que visitamos foi o Campo Santo. É um grande cemitério antigo que abriga importantes peças de arte, incluindo antigos sarcófagos romanos e afrescos medievais, e onde são enterradas pessoas importantes da cidade. Ele sofreu sérios estragos devido aos bombardeios aliados durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, que destruiu o telhado e grande parte dos afrescos, e até hoje está em reconstrução.
O segundo lugar visitado foi o Batistério. É uma estrutura fantástica construída sobre outra mais antiga e a maior do gênero na Itália, com uma acústica perfeita como se fosse uma câmara de ressonância. Enquanto estávamos no andar superior, de onde se tem uma belíssima vista do interior, uma das funcionárias fez uma demonstração da acústica do local, cantando em vários tons e deixando todos hipnotizados com sua bela voz e recebendo aplausos no final. Quando saímos fomos procurar algo para comer pois já eram por volta de 15:00h. Para não perdermos tempo, compramos apenas um gelato grande para cada, o que sustentou até a hora do jantar.
Seguimos então para o terceiro local, o Museo delle Sinopie. É um museu interessante, mas parece que pouco visitado, já que não há muitos atrativos. Os principais são várias pinturas em terra vermelha recuperadas das paredes destruídas do Campo Santo, roupas medievais utilizadas no filme Romeo e Julieta, e 2 salas multimídia mostrando o Campo Santo ao longo dos anos, incluindo o que 'sobreviveu' aos bombardeios e o que já foi recuperado, e a restauração da Torre de Pisa.
Sem perder tempo, saímos e fomos para a Catedral de Pisa. É uma catedral belíssima por fora e por dentro em estilo Românico, dedicada à Virgem Maria, com muitas esculturas, pintura e altares belíssimos. Olhamos praticamente tudo, tiramos algumas fotos, fizemos uma pausa para oração e saímos.
Seguimos para o último lugar, o Museo del’Opera del Duomo, que guarda várias esculturas e relíquias da Catedral. Como estávamos exaustos, olhamos apenas algumas salas e paramos para descansar. Tiramos algumas fotos e seguimos em frente até a Piazza dei Cavalieri, onde ficam a estátua de Cosimo I, a Igreja de S. Stefano dei Cavalieri, o Palácio do Relógio e o Palácio dos Cavaleiros, que foi a sede designada por Cosimo I para as Ordem dos Cavaleiros e hoje abriga a Scuola Normale di Pisa. Depois de algumas fotos, seguimos pela Via Borgo Stretto onde há uma igreja, a Igreja de San Michele in Borgo, que é simples mas belíssima por dentro. Seguimos em frente até a Piazza Garibaldi, uma das principais da cidade. Tiramos algumas fotos ali e na Ponte di Mezzo, de onde se tem uma belíssima vista do pôr-do-sol. Decidimos dali voltar para o hotel para concluir nossa chegada, organizar nossas coisas e nos prepararmos para, finalmente, jantarmos.
Chegamos ao hotel por volta das 18:20h e, como já estava tudo preparado para o checkin, foi só pegarmos as chaves e as malas e irmos para o quarto. Quando chegamos, tivemos uma grande supresa: nos deram um apartamento enorme duplo, sendo dois quartos com duas camas de casal. Nos arrumamos e saímos para jantarmos no restaurante que fica na mesma galeria do hotel, o Caffe Gambrinus. Ele não é excelente e é um pouco careiro, mas saboreamos uma bela massa ali mesmo para compensar o dia exaustivo. Assim que terminamos, voltamos para o hotel e organizamos nossas coisas para passearmos no dia seguinte e deixamos quase tudo pronto para a viagem do dia seguinte para a próxima cidade: Gênova... 1) Pisa é uma cidade estranha, pois tem um bom comércio, bons restaurantes e lugares legais para visitar, mas parece que a única parte conservada é a Praça dos Milagres, o restante da cidade parece não receber a atenção que deveria. O que é de mais atrativo pode-se visitar em apenas um dia.
2) Uma grande dica é: cuidado com as áreas restritas se for para lá de carro, pois um descuido e a multa é certa.

The day to leave Firenze and go to Pisa had came. We had decided go early to Pisa to enjoy the whole day and not lose time, since the next day we would go to Genoa. We got up at around 08:00am and got ready to the last breakfast at the hotel. While we were talking during the breakfast, we decided not to leave in a hurry, because the check-in time at the hotel La Pace, in Pisa, would be only after 02:00pm and it wouldn't be good walking by the city carrying all our luggages. So we had a big breakfast and then returned to our room to get our things and leave the hotel.
We arrived at Santa Maria Novella Station at around 10:20am to try to get the next regional train to Pisa, which would leave at 10:28am, but we could purchase tickets only to the next train at 10:53am. So we were waiting patiently our train, which departed exactly at 10:53am. The travel was very cool, we passed through several towns and stations, until we arrive at around 12:03pm at Pisa Centrale Station, in Pisa. We got off the train and went looking for our hotel, La Pace, which is inside a gallery near the square in front of the station. The gallery doesn't look very nice, but the hotel is very good, comfortable and have a very good reception, and I recommend it to anyone thinking of staying there. As we arrived before the check-in time, we introduce ourselves and left our bags at the hotel's luggage storage, so we could walk around the city without losing precious time waiting for a room. Before leaving the hotel, a receptionist gave us a map and showed the directions to get to the main sights.
We left the hotel and went towards the Piazza dei Miracoli. We went by Via Francesco Crispi to the Solferino Bridge, which crosses the Arno River (that one which crosses Firenze) and then we went by the Via Roma to arrive at the Piazza dei Miracoli. And we could see the famous Leaning Tower, the Baptistery and the Cathedral of Pisa. They're FANTASTIC structures. We took some pictures in front of the square (there were so many people taking pictures 'holding' or 'pushing' the Tower that seemed a 'flashmob', so we refuse to do the same) and then we went looking for the ticket office to buy the tickets to visit the places. The ticket office is across the square and there are many options of combined tickets to visit between 1 to 4 places to choose between CampoSanto, Baptistery, Museo delle Sinopie and Museo del'Opera del Duomo. Admission to the Cathedral is free and is already included at the ticket. The ticket to the Leaning Tower is sold separately. You can also purchase in advance by the official website: The Opera della Primaziale Pisana. We bought tickets for only 4 places + Cathedral, we didn't want to climb the tower.

It's a big ancient cemetery that houses important pieces of art, including ancient Roman sarcophagi and medieval frescoes, and where important people in the city are buried. It had serious damages due to bombings during the Second World War, which destroyed the roof and lots of the frescoes, and even today is under reconstruction. There is a room that shows what 'survived' the bombings and what has already been recovered.
The second place visited was the Baptistery. It's a fantastic structure built in replacement of an older baptistery and it's the largest one in Italy, with a perfect acoustic like a resonance chamber. While we were on the top floor, where you have a beautiful view of the interior, one of the officials made a demonstration of the acoustics of the place, singing in various tones and letting everyone mesmerized with her beautiful voice and receiving applauses at the end. When we left there, we were looking for something to eat, because it was already around 03:00pm. We bought a big gelato as a 'lunch' to each one, and we wasn't hungry until the dinner time.
Then we went to the third place, the Museo delle Sinopie. It's an interesting museum, but it seems that it's not much visited, because there are not many attractive things there. The main ones are many paintings in red earth recovered from the destroyed walls of Camposanto, medieval clothing used specially in the movie Romeo and Juliet, and two multimedia rooms showing the Camposanto along the years and the restoration of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
We left there and then we went to the Cathedral of Pisa. It's a wonderful place both outside and inside made in Romanesque style, dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, with many sculptures, paintings and very beautiful altars. We looked just about everything, took some pictures, paused for prayer and went out of there.
We went to the last place, the Museo del’Opera del Duomo, which houses many sculptures and relics of the Cathedral. How we were tired of looking at museums, we looked a few rooms and stopped to rest. It was almost 05:00pm when we went by Via Cardinale Pietro Maffi to arrive at the Piazza Martiri della Libertà, which is near the Church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria. We took some pictures and went towards the Piazza dei Cavalieri, where there are a statue of Cosimo I de Medici, the Church of S. Stefano dei Cavalieri, the Palazzo dell'Orologio and the Palazzo dei Cavalieri, which was the seat designated by Cosimo I to the Order of Knights of S. After taking some photos, we went by the Via Borgo Stretto where there is a church, the Church of San Michele in Borgo, which is simple but very beautiful from inside. Then we went to Piazza Garibaldi, one of the main squares of the city. We took some pictures there and on the Ponte di Mezzo, where you have a beautiful view of the sunset. After that, we decided back to the hotel to finish the checkin, organize our things and finally get ready for dinner.

When we entered there, we had a big surprise: they gave us a big double room, with two bedrooms and a queen sized bed in each one. We got ready and went out to have dinner in a restaurant at the same gallery of the hotel, the Caffe Gambrinus. It's not an excelent place and it's a bit expensive, but even so we ate a very good pasta to compensate the exhausting day. Then we went to the third place, the Museo delle Sinopie. It's an interesting museum, but it seems that it's not much visited, because there are not many attractive things there. The main ones are many paintings in red earth recovered from the destroyed walls of Camposanto, medieval clothing used specially in the movie Romeo and Juliet, and two multimedia rooms showing the Camposanto along the years and the restoration of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
We left there and then we went to the Cathedral of Pisa. It's a wonderful place both outside and inside made in Romanesque style, dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, with many sculptures, paintings and very beautiful altars. We looked just about everything, took some pictures, paused for prayer and went out of there.
We went to the last place, the Museo del’Opera del Duomo, which houses many sculptures and relics of the Cathedral. How we were tired of looking at museums, we looked a few rooms and stopped to rest. It was almost 05:00pm when we went by Via Cardinale Pietro Maffi to arrive at the Piazza Martiri della Libertà, which is near the Church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria. We took some pictures and went towards the Piazza dei Cavalieri, where there are a statue of Cosimo I de Medici, the Church of S. Stefano dei Cavalieri, the Palazzo dell'Orologio and the Palazzo dei Cavalieri, which was the seat designated by Cosimo I to the Order of Knights of S. After taking some photos, we went by the Via Borgo Stretto where there is a church, the Church of San Michele in Borgo, which is simple but very beautiful from inside. Then we went to Piazza Garibaldi, one of the main squares of the city. We took some pictures there and on the Ponte di Mezzo, where you have a beautiful view of the sunset. After that, we decided back to the hotel to finish the checkin, organize our things and finally get ready for dinner.
We arrived at the hotel at around 06:20pm and how everything was already right for the checkin, we just took the keys and our luggages and went to our room. When we entered there, we had a big surprise: they gave us a big double room, with two bedrooms and a queen sized bed in each one. We got ready and went out to have dinner in a restaurant at the same gallery of the hotel, the Caffe Gambrinus. It's not an excelent place and it's a bit expensive, but even so we ate a very good pasta to compensate the exhausting day. After dinner, we went back to the hotel and organized our things for the city tour at the next day and let some things ready for the travel of following day to the next town: Genova... 1) Pisa is a weird city, because it has a good trade center, good restaurants and nice places to visit, but it seems that the only preserved place is Piazza dei Miracoli, the rest of the city doesn't receive the same care. So, the main tourist places can be visited in just one day.
2) A great tip: beware of restricted areas if you go by car, because if you make a little mistake, you will certainly receive a fine.
3) There are several Indian barkers around the Piazza dei Miracoli selling the same products of all kinds and sizes with the same prices, so you can choose just one to purchase your souvenirs.
4) The sunset from the bridges over the river Arno is a spetacular scene, it's very good for taking pictures.
